Project overview:
The Havhingsten Telecommunication cable is an open cable system that will span more than 940km of cable linking Ireland (IRL) , Isle of Man, UK and Denmark (DK). The cable will connect to data centres within each jurisdiction which will allow access to telecommunication companies and internet service providers improving data speeds.
The marine elements of the Havhingsten telecommunication cable are proposed to cross the Irish Sea from Loughshinny, North of Dublin in Ireland to Squire’s Gate, South of Blackpool on the West coast of the UK. Two connections to the Isle of Man landing at Port Erin and Port Grenaugh will branch from the Irish Sea route. The Havhingsten route also crosses the North Sea from Seaton Sluice in Northumberland and on to Houstrup in Denmark. An overview of the proposed project route is included below.
A 500m wide search corridor was identified from desk top studies as potentially suitable for installation of marine telecommunication cables to the Isle of Man. Following identification of the two 500m wide corridors, geophysical, geotechnical and environmental surveys have been undertaken to establish the conditions on the sea bed and identify habitats and species present or absent.
Suitable routes have been identified that provide a good engineering solution while also minimising the impacts to marine habitats and species. The finalisation of the installation route of the 40mm wide cable within the 500m wide corridor follows consultation with stakeholders and the results of detailed marine surveys.
The schedule for installation is dependent on receipt of authorisation from the relevant authorities. The proposed schedule has been designed to avoid disruption to stakeholders during summer months:
